Whitehaven Beach - Great Barrier Reef - Queensland Australia

THE WHITSUNDAYS

Discovered and named by Captain James Cook in 1770 these islands create the Whitsunday Passage, a channel formed by Whitsunday Island, Hook Island, Hayman Island and the coast of Queensland, Australia. Cook traversed the passage on the Whitsun Day of that year.

The Whitsundays more properly, The Cumberland Group, named in honour of The Duke of Cumberland, a common practice in those days to curry favour with the rich and powerful. Nothing has changed.

The Whitsundays are a group of 74 tropical islands encompassed by The Great Barrier Reef, lying midway up the Queensland coast 1120km north of Brisbane, the islands are right in the heart of the World Heritage listed marine park wonderland.

The best way to explore The Whitsundays is via the deck of a boat, and with offering fully crewed charters, sailing the islands has never been easier.

Our trips include viewing the scenic splendour of Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach from the lookout, the bush walk to Betty's Beach and the aboriginal paintings in the caves in Nara Inlet. There are many opportunities for SCUBA diving and snorkelling among the numerous fringing reefs that are made up of about 400 species of hard and soft coral. The colours will amaze you.

Marine life abounds, some 1500 species call the reef home including the most colourful fish, turtles, dolphins, mantarays and whales during the migration season.
See them all from above and below the surface of the crystal clear waters.
After anchoring overnight in Blue Pearl Bay, start the day with a snorkel among the friendly reef fish; a highlight of any Whitsunday trip.
